Slowly but surely. But mainly slowly

Gently, Bentley

This was one of my Grandma Naughton’s regular expressions, borrowed from a radio comedy series called Take It From Here (I thought it was ITMA, but it pays to check). It means, more or less, slow down, take it one step at a time. Therefore it seems appropriate for an early post like this, where, frankly, I haven’t got much of a clue what I’m doing.

The purpose of this post is to provide a link to some of the work I’ve done for GQ magazine over the years. I started there in about 1996 when James Brown was editor and have contributed numerous features, interviews and reviews. It’s not every magazine that would let you write a profile of Attila the Hun and also interview David Beckham. Sadly, the UK edition no longer exists in print form, although it is still in rude digital health. Anyway, to business . . . (consults the WordPress Haynes Manual.)

You should be able to find some of my GQ work here

Now then

My name is John Naughton and this is my blog. I’ve been writing for a living since 1986, or to put that in context, when I started out, Now That’s What I Call Music 8 was at the top of the charts. My first interview was with a barber in Chorlton-cum-Hardy and I got his name wrong. Since then I’ve done a lot of interviews and I’ve made it a matter of professional pride to almost always get the subject’s name right. Oh, and if you’re looking for “the other” John Naughton – Observer columnist, technology expert, the man my family refer to as “the successful John Naughton” – you’ve come to the wrong place. When I’ve developed a bit more tech nous, I’ll put a link to his stuff. Incidentally, he does a daily email which really is excellent.
